English homework as paragraph format

What is a Paragraph?

Generally speaking, a paragraph is a group of sentences that develops one particular idea putting them in a systematic order. A paragraph centers round a definite topic which is complete in itself. It is also an important unit of composition. A composition consists of a couple of paragraphs put on the basis of composition structure. But a paragraph also has a definite format. It should have a systematic beginning, development and ending. So is the basic structure of a composition. Reasonably, a paragraph is considered a short composition. Therefore, a paragraph can be called an independent piece of writing on a particular topic as well as a part of a long composition.
However, from the references stated above, we can conclude that a paragraph is a group of sentences—
• dealing with only one idea;
• arranged systematically;
• having a clear beginning, development and ending; and
• having a completeness in itself.

Physical set-up of a Paragraph

There is no hard and fast rule how many sentences or words a paragraph does contain. Generally, a paragraph requires as many sentences as it needs to express the definite idea completely. However, a well-written paragraph consists of three important parts: Beginning, Body and Ending. Clearly speaking, it should have a Beginner or Beginning sentence; a Body that develops the idea or Developer; and a Terminator that concludes the paragraph or the Ending sentence.
The Beginning:
It is the introductory sentence of the paragraph. It is also called the topic sentence. Usually a single sentence is used as the beginner. A good topic sentence serves to introduce the topic and the controlling idea about the topic. The topic sentence is the first and most important sentence of a paragraph and reasonably, deserves to be more attractive and impressive.
The Body:
The body of the paragraph consists of sentences placed between the topic sentence and the ending sentence in it. The sentences in the body support, elaborate and expand the idea of the paragraph. One thing is to remember it is the topic sentence or the main idea of the paragraph that will determine which sentences or information will be included in the body for the paragraph to be developed. The idea signaled by the topic sentence is developed or supported by the necessary facts which take the readers deep into the paragraph topic.
The Ending:
The last sentence in a paragraph usually determines the conclusion of the paragraph. It is the terminator which makes the readers feel that the idea that was developed in the developer now ends here in a natural way. It should be remembered that the beginning and the ending of a paragraph are related to each other; there is a link between them.

Paragraph writing tips

While writing a paragraph, the following rules and techniques should be followed:

• The beginning sentence must be relevant and attractive.
• A paragraph must be written in one paragraph.
• There is no hard and fast rule about the length of a paragraph. It may be limited within 100-150 words. Some experts opine to try not to go over twelve sentences but exceed at least five.
• The sentences in a paragraph should not be detached from one another; rather, transition words; such as- first, then, next, lastly, finally, moreover, afterwards, therefore, however etc. should be used.
• It is better not to quote from any writer.
• The sentences in a paragraph should be in the indirect speech.
• All the sentences should be relevant to the topic of the paragraph.
• Sentences must be set with correct language and grammatical accuracy.
• The sentences should be arranged in the proper and systematic order.
• The paragraph should be written using common and simple vocabulary.
• The ending sentence must be effective and relating with the topic sentence.
